Google Knol: What are the Marketing and Optimization Implications?

2008
05.13

Google has recently announced a new service they intend to offer to the online masses. It is called Google Knol (a Knol is their word for a unit of knowledge) and it is being seen and described as a direct competitor to the widely used and highly ranked Wikipedia.

In recent years Wikipedia entries for any number of topics can be found in the top or Google’s search engine results, which naturally leads to huge amounts of traffic.

Traffic that goes to pages that very conspicuously do not contain any of Google’s ads.

Google is, of course, drawing criticism for this new offering. Then again, Google would probably draw criticism if they managed to develop a clean burning alternative to fossil fuels.

But in this case they are drawing fire from the Internet community in general and the marketing community in particular. This is not a new criticism, however. With the acquisition of services like Blogger and YouTube, Google has been slowly but surely moving away from their original goal of simply indexing the world’s content to providing it. Many are pointing out the inherent conflict of interest here. Google naturally claims that they will not attempt to edit or verify the articles, or Knols, nor will they give any special weight to the Knols simply because they are hosted by Google.

Nevertheless, there are many, many businesses out there that depend on search traffic for their business and livelihood. The thought that a search engine might be introducing system that may or may not have a significant skewing effect on what should theoretically be impartial results. If Google can turn Knol into the preferred social knowledge site and generate the kind of traffic that Wikipedia does, that will mean countless visitors that will be subjected to Google’s ads. Given that opportunity, is it any wonder that people would be skeptical about claims that deny the existence of preferred content?

So if Google Knol takes off, what does that mean for the online marketing community? Is this going to be a new platform for marketers to employ? Or will it be something that changes the way we do our normal online marketing?

A lot of that will depend on a few things. Early on in Wikipedia history it was a popular target for Internet marketers, until it started using the no follow tags in their outbound links. So suddenly it was less attractive from an SEO standpoint, though some still attempt to use it for the traffic it could generate. (Although overt marketing and advertising attempts will get you banned from the service.) So the first question will be whether or not Knol allows an author to include outbound links that will enhance the rankings of off-page websites.

But regardless, there is more to online marketing than gathering links. There is also branding and building trust and/or notoriety within your individual industries. And some of the features of Knol might provide the opportunity to do so.

One of the major differences between Wikipedia and Google Knol is that Knol focuses on highlighting the authors, as compared to the anonymous collaboration model of Wikipedia. By doing so they are hoping to create a sense of responsibility and credibility that their competition doesn’t share. The opportunity here is to establish oneself as the specialist in that area.

Where Wikipedia allowed open access to an article for the community to edit or update, that won’t be the case for Knols. Instead of a group effort on a single article, Google plans to have any number of articles (Knols) on the same topic. They seem to assume that the most relevant, authoritative, or popular articles will naturally float to the top of the heap.

So here is a new thought. As search engine marketers are we going to find ourselves optimizing and developing campaigns for single articles? The thought of optimizing a Wikipedia entry would plausibly make one laugh. Why would you optimize it? What would be the point? It’s just information. And it ranks fine for what it is. Who cares if it ranks higher than another similar entry?

This won’t be the case with Knols. If a Google Knol is all about authoritative authoring, and if the most authoritative articles are supposed to float to the top, how long before optimization techniques determine authority?

If, indeed, optimization tactics can have this sort of effect, how badly will that damage the supposed credibility they’re trying to create? Will Google be ready for something like that? Will the inherent branding and traffic benefits be enough to justify SEO on a Knol?

Only time will tell.

Affiliate Marketing For The New Wave Of Entrepreneurs

One great feature of the affiliate marketing campaign is that you pay for the advertising only if it is effective and you pay the affiliates only after you have received payment for the sales made. In the past, to make money with affiliate marketing systems, all you had to do was pay for your traffic and send it to your affiliate link. Getting a lot of profit on affiliate marketing programs, however, does not depend so much on the compensation method is it does on the traffic generated by your site.

If you are fresh to affiliate marketing, you may be overwhelmed with the number of systems available out there for you to join and promote. If you have a shopping cart on your site and you are not involved in affiliate marketing than you are missing out on one of the best online marketing techniques available to you. Whether you realize it or not, if you’ve been on the Internet today, you have encountered affiliate marketing.

Well, simply because affiliate marketing is the easiest and probably the best way to earn money online, unless otherwise you are a businessman and would rather sell your own products online than advertise other entrepreneurs products on your site. Although affiliate marketing is touted as one of the easiest and most successful ways to earn money online, it’s not as easy as it sounds. The first important affiliate marketing secret to bear in mind is the reason why affiliate marketing remains the most effective way of marketing any online enterprise.

Lots of programs offer “get rich quick schemes”, but real Internet marketing is not about how to get rich in no time. One of the greatest things that happened to me in my online career so far was being appointed moderator at one on the most popular online Internet marketing forums. Yet there are people who use that information and use that opportunity and develop what is popularly known as the Internet Marketing lifestyle, in which they stay at home, spend time with their families, indulge in their hobbies, and make money whether working or sleeping.

So, you’re spending a lot of money, time and efforts, working like mad to market your business, website, blogs using the most powerful Internet marketing strategies, hoping to make your business a success to earn you a comfortable living. Most probably, you have been one of the hard starters, extremely busy writing ad copies, articles, press releases, sending them to media outlets and popular publications, working night and day to promote your business using the most powerful Internet marketing strategies.

Every year, many one-man online stores and small e-tailers close their Internet doors and drop out of the market without giving themselves a fair go at success because of Irritable Online Marketing Syndrome (IOMS). Being successful at Internet marketing does require doing the right things, like search engine optimization and targeted online promotion. Successful Internet marketing is the goal of every one who sees potential in the online realm.

Internet Marketing and Search Engine Indexing.

The world of Internet marketing is a highly competitive place. As a beginning Internet marketer there are some basic things you should know about how search engines spider and index your web site. Unless the search engines find your web site and index it, there is no way the general public will know that it is there.

After you have created your web site and chosen the products or services you want to provide, you will be ready to get your site listed with the search engines. When developing your marketing strategy, it is important to include a plan to get your web site spidered quickly. In order to get your site indexed you must let the search engine spiders know you are there in the first place.

You may have wondered if there are ways to lure the spiders to your web site other than manual submission. The good news is that many SEOs recommend the following methods rather than submitting your pages directly.

The best way to get your site spidered quickly is to link your web site to another site that is already indexed, that is related to your site, and that is spidered frequently. Having your site mentioned in news releases, blogs, and so on can get your site your web site spidered very quickly, sometimes within days. There are several websites that are very good for this. The first I have found is stmadvertising.com – they let you make a page all of your own. That means you can define keywords, and of course get relevant Anchor Links.

You can also use the more traditional methods including posting in forums and providing articles for the various article directories. If you choose this route, be careful not to spam. Follow the posted rules, give helpful answers, and do not go overboard on your “sig file”. Private forums are not always indexed, so make certain that the forums where you post display recent posts and are listed in search results. One forum that is indexed by google on a more than daily basis is the forum at affprogram.info. They have a special script that makes a search engine friendly page for every post and thread.

No matter which method you choose to get your web site spidered, you will need a good site map. A site map lists and links to all pages on your site. If your site consists of over approximately one hundred pages, consider using a multi-page site map. Make certain that every site map page links to all other site map pages. You should have a link to your site map on your home page and preferably on each of your pages. You should make sure your web site pages are simple and free of useless clutter.

Getting your web site spidered quickly is the most important thing you can do to achieve success as an Internet marketer. Using the methods suggested above can be very helpful in getting your web site indexed.

    Website Design Tips

When first starting out to create a website, especially if you are a beginner You can create your own web pages using a editor like Microsoft’s Front Page. With this software, you can write your web page like you would any document and then drag and drop images easily. Some practice may be needed, by buying some templates, you can create a professional website for free or by using some of the free templates found on the Internet. Mainly in order for you to successfully present your ideas you have to create an effective layout design in an interesting manner whatever your topic may be.

Layout Content Application of graphic designs Easy and quick navigation Logo Choosing color

Layout format – this will serve as your guide for a good design. Primarily this context must encompass a clear and well organized content that will make everybody understand and appreciate. A simple design, layout makes it easier for you to build your website. The end result will be a website which your visitors will find easy to navigate and easy get whatever information they want.

Application of graphic designs – you must be careful in choosing for the appropriate design that will best represent your projects.

Easy and quick navigation -Always see to it that you are able to include a link that will bring them back to the main page. create a navigation structure that is common for all the pages in your Web.Keep the use of hyperlinks inside your text paragraphs to a minimum. Don’t use hyperlinks inside text paragraphs to send your visitors to every random page of your Web. If you must use hyperlinks, add them to the bottom of a paragraph or to the navigation menus of your site. A key aspect to making your visitors happy is insuring they go where they need to go, quickly and efficiently. Good navigation design comes from experience, and should be one of the most important aspects of your website design project.

Logo – Create a simple logo to identity your website. Have a captivating tag line somewhere with the header, and write an About Us page which describes the uniqueness of your website. These will leave an impression for your visitors to remember your website.

Choosing colour- Have a clear color scheme based on the theme of your website. Choose carefully a set of colors you use for your background, text, border, tables and cells etc.The color scheme expresses the characters of your website and makes it unique and attractive.

one of the most important aspects you need to keep in mind at all times when choosing a website design firm or designing the website yourself. It is very important to remember that most of your visitors haven?t spoken to you yet and your site will be the first impression they have of your company. If your website design lacks professionalism and/or does not reflect that of a well established company, your new prospect can easily loose confidence.

Try and avoid run of the mill things like page counters, java text scrolling, flashing images, GIF images, signs which say “we are not ready.” Or, too many illustrations or animations, black grounds or fade ins.

    2. Create a design which conveys in a stylish way what it has to. Instead of using downloaded illustrations use original ones.

    3. Avoid things like heavy files or graphics. These will slow down your pages. GIF is better than JPEG files.

    4. Think of the target audience and subject being addressed when designing. The overall effect should be that of exclusivity.

The Real Truth About Making Money on the Internet

    2008
    05.12

Are you thinking about starting an online business? Have you already started one and you’re not making the money you’d like to? If you answer yes to either of these questions then there are some truths about Internet marketing that you need to know.

First of all, “Forget All The Hype” and “Get Rich Quick Schemes” that you read about every day on the Internet. It’s not going to happen! If you’re like me, you get lots of email everyday promising to make you rich overnight. It’s entirely possible to make a good living on your computer from the comfort of your home and maybe even someday get rich. But it won’t happen overnight. It will take some careful planning, instruction, commitment, and persistence.

Don’t believe that you can put your business on complete autopilot and do absolutely nothing and still have money rolling in all the time. There is no free lunch. Internet Marketing is a business and you have to treat it like one. You have to work at it to make it work.

Next, find a good product/products or good affiliate programs to market. And be willing to stay with it for 6 months to a year. A lot of people are just jumping from program to program and never taking the time to really work the program they already have. Then they wonder why they can’t seem to get anything to work. It takes time to build a substantial income on the Internet, just like anywhere else. So choose your product/program carefully, work it for a while, stay with it and give it time to work.

Again, choose your product/program carefully. Remember, whatever program or product you are marketing must fill a need. There must be a demand for it. If no one wants or needs what you have to offer, no matter how wonderful it is, you won’t be able to sell it.

Now, allow me to make a very important point, one that is often over- looked. No matter what kind of business you have, Internet or otherwise, you “WILL” have to advertise and promote your business. There is no such thing as purchasing or joining a program, putting up a website, kicking back and watching the money roll in. If no one knows you have a business then no one will buy your product. You have to let people know you are there if you want them to notice you. Internet marketing is like everything else. If you do nothing, you will get nothing. There are many places and ways to advertise on the Internet and in other places.

Lastly, remember, you are building a business. And it takes time to build a business that will last. So take some time to learn all you can about Internet marketing. The more you learn, the greater your chances for success. Success in Internet marketing is just like success in any other venture. It won’t just fall in your lap. You have to work at it. Take your time, do your due diligence, learn all you can, don’t give up, and success will be yours.

Why Google Adsense is essential for affiliate marketers with content sites

    2008
    05.12

    Article submitted by Jason Murphy

To know why Google Adsense is essential for your content sites is to know first how this works.

The concept is really simple, if you think about it. The publisher or the webmaster inserts a javascript into a certain website. Each time the page is accessed, the java script will pull advertisements from the Adsense program. The ads that are targeted should therefore be related to the content that is contained on the web page serving the ad. If a visitor clicks on an advertisement, the webmaster serving the ad earns a portion of the money that the advertiser is paying the search engine for the click.

The search engine is the one handling all the tracking and payments, providing an easy way for webmasters to display content-sensitive and targeted ads without having the hassle to solicit advertisers, collect funds, monitor the clicks and statistics which could be a time-consuming task in itself. It seems that there is never a shortage of advertisers in the program from which the search engine pulls the Adsense ads. Also webmasters are less concerned by the lack of information search engines are providing and are more focused in making cash from these search engines.

The first reason why Adsense is essential for content sites is because it already has come a long way in understanding the needs of publishers and webmasters. Together with its continuous progression is the appearance of more advanced system that allows full ad customization. Webmasters are given the chance to choose from many different types of text ad formats to better complement their website and fit their webpage layout.

The different formatting enables the site owners the possibility of more click through from visitors who may or may not be aware of what they are clicking on. It can also appeal to the people visiting thus make them take that next step of looking up what it is all about. This way the people behind the Adsense will get their content read and making profit in the process.

The second reason is the ability of the Adsense publishers to track not only how their sites are progressing but also the earnings based on the webmaster-defined channels. The recent improvements in the search engines gives webmasters the capability to monitor how their ads are performing using customizable reports that has the capacity to detail page impressions, clicks and click-through rates. Webmasters and publishers can now track specific ad formats, colors and pages within a website. Trends are also easily spotted.

With the real-time reporting at hand, the effectiveness of the changes made will be assessed quickly. There would be time to sort out the contents that people are making the most clicks on. The ever-changing demands would be met while generating cash for the webmasters and publishers. The more flexible tools are also allowing webmasters to group web pages by URL, domain, ad type or category, which will provide them some accurate insight on which pages, ads and domains are performing best.

The last and final reason is that the advertisers have realized the benefits associated having their ads served on targeted websites. Thus increasing the possibility that a prospective web surfer will have an interest in their product and services. All because of the content and its constant maintenance. As opposed to those who are no using Adsense in their sites, they are given the option of having other people do their content for them, giving them the benefit of having successful and money-generating web sites.

Adsense is all about targeted content, the more targeted your content is, the more target the search engines? ads will be. There are some web masters and publishers who are focused more on their site contents and how best to maintain them rather than the cash that the ads will generate for them. This is the part where the effectiveness is working its best.

There was a time when people were not yet aware of the money to be achieved from advertisements. The cash generated only came into existence when the webmasters and publishers realized how they can make Adsense be that generator. In those days, the content were the most important factors that is taken quite seriously. It still is. With the allure of money, of course.

Becoming an Internet marketing pro is not as easy as you may think. Although you can learn a lot on your own, there are some things that you need to get help with. Of course, before you can do this, you need to know where and how you can learn the ropes of Internet marketing. This is something that you can do if you put your mind to it. The main reason that many people fail in this area is because they are not totally dedicated to the learning process. Instead of letting this happen to you, find out how you can learn the ropes of Internet marketing, and then take things from there.

Here are three places to search for information on Internet marketing. These are great resources for newcomers, but also for people who have been in the game for a while. The fact of the matter is that any place you can gather Internet marketing is a place that you should consider looking.

As you can imagine, the best place to find Internet marketing is online. There are many websites and blogs devoted to this field, and if you put time into it, you will find thousands of them. There is enough Internet marketing information available online to keep you busy for days on end. You may not want to read through everything that you find, but you do need to spend some time with these resources.

Getting information from people who are successful Internet marketers is always a good idea. For instance, do you know somebody who is doing a great job right now in this industry? If so, ask them if they are willing to become a mentor to you. You may have to search around for the perfect mentor, but if you ask enough people, you are sure to find somebody who is willing to give you advice when you need it. And remember, learning from somebody who has been a success may be the best way to go.

When it comes to Internet marketing, there are many books that you can purchase. You may be more so inclined to read online, but this is not always best in every case. Consider buying at least one book on Internet marketing so that you can get all of the information that you need.

These are three of the best ways to learn the Internet marketing ropes. If you are interested in this industry, you will want to try out all three of these as soon as possible. The more information that you read about Internet marketing the better chance you have of succeeding early on. And when it comes down to it, this is probably what you want to do, right?

The 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective Internet Marketers

    2008
    05.12

The Internet is an accessible, global marketplace through which billions of dollars change hands each year. On just one site, Ebay, over $30 billion gets exchanged every 365 days. That?s some nice pocket change. Yet with all the success being experienced, and all the potential for success that permeates the web, too many people are still losing out. Through no conscious fault of their own, these poor souls usually find themselves sharing one or more ineffective business habits and practices. Get to know seven of these habits so that you don?t miss out on your fair share of this multi-billion-dollar pie that is transpiring over the Internet.

    1) The Habit of Jumping. The need to jump around like a jumping bean affects many people. These people make a habit of going jumping from one thing to the next, then to the next and so on?without ever thoroughly exploring any one path in depth. You can fight this habit by sticking to one business idea for at least six months and seeing it through to completion.

    2) The God Habit. This ambitious habit stems from the ill-conceived notion that an Internet Marketer can be everything to everyone. Every successful business serves a Target Market, a very specific type of customer. Your Target Market can’t be humans that breathe. That’s a little too broad. Avoid this habit by correctly identifying, in very specific terms, the most likely group of people who will purchase from you. Find your niche.

    3) The Habit of Blinding Love. This is another habit that sounds great, but usually yields no results. This is the one where people think they should just do what they love and let the money come. Unfortunately, you can’t just pet dogs and wait for the money to pour into your door. That may be an exaggerated analogy, but the principle is accurate. You have to link the activity you love to the world of business. In this example, start a dog-walking company. If you like building model cars, build them and sell them. Or build them, have them photographed and then sell those. You must link what you love with what people will pay for.

    4) The Habit of False Idols. This is the one where, you, the unsuspecting Internet Marketer happens upon an attention-grabbing speaker who tells of a rich, lush oasis, whereupon he proceeds to lead you into the desert, describing the mirage up ahead and taking your money all the while. Then when you finally run out of money, this loud, flashy speaker turns to dust and blows away in the wind as the mirage that was just up ahead fades from view. You?re now broke and alone in the desert. The Lesson: Don’t listen to someone because they’re great at getting your attention. Make sure they can prove paradise exists because they’ve been there.

    5) The Tomorrow Habit. When you know you need to do something, but you just don’t feel like doing it now, you can do it tomorrow. For example, when you’re watching the big game and your business needs attention, you don’t worry about the business because you can do it tomorrow. Or maybe when you?re tired and ready for a nap even though you know your client list needs to be contacted, again you don’t worry you can do it tomorrow. Basically, it comes to: You can go for success now or do it tomorrow. Of course, if you always do it tomorrow, you can never complete it today. Know how to combat this habit? Just do it.

    6) The Sheepish Habit. In a world full of plain, brown shoes, why are you deciding to open a plain, brown shoe store? Sure you might get lucky and have someone’s shoes fall apart while they’re right in front of the store, but why not try opening a shirt store? A pants store? Look around you. Each year there are more and more and more new products or improvements to old ones. That means there is plenty of room for yours. Go against the grain and get noticed. Fall into line and you just might fall into oblivion.

    7) Alzheimer’s Habit. Don’t forget this last habit of forgetting. Forgetting what? You might ask. The answer is: Forgetting your customers after they say yes to you and forgetting potential customers when they say no to you. It’s never OK to forget them always follow-up. They want to hear from you, especially if you have useful information for them or a discount to offer them. It’s not over once they buy from you. It’s just the beginning. It’s not over when they refuse to buy from you. It’s just the beginning. So capture their emails, plan for the follow-up and don’t forget!

That’s it. You know what not to do and you know how to take corrective moves in case you foul up. Make a quick check of your daily routines and make sure that you?re not inadvertently following one of The 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective Internet Marketers.

Making Money on the Internet for Beginners

    2008
    05.12

If you’re interested in making some extra money to pay off creditors or earn enough income to replace your current job or career then the Internet is the place where aspiring entrepreneurs are turning. Unlike traditional businesses, a business on the Internet can be started with virtually no capital, with the exception of your website expense. You have to have a website if you want to do business on the Internet… PERIOD.

If you don’t have your own product to advertise on your website, there are literally millions of affiliate programs on the Internet who do have products and will pay you commissions to sell their products from your website. You can choose to sell cell phones, or internet services, candles, furniture, or maybe insurance, the field is wide open. The affiliate program you choose will also handle all the money, shipping and correspondence with your customers. All you need to do is to generate the traffic to your new website in order to make the sale.

Often times the affiliate program you join will offer you free websites and that is great, but you will never generate enough free traffic to these affiliate sites to succeed without having your own website. Why you ask? For one, the search engines don’t list affiliate sites and you definitely want to get listed in the search engines, this will be your biggest free traffic source.

One of the best ways to generate free traffic is to get involved in link exchanges. You will basically place a link to another site on your website and they will in turn place a link on their site to yours. Once you have exchanged several hundred links a portion of your link partners traffic will come to your site. The free websites you have been given via your affiliate program will not be able to be edited in anyway, thus link exchanges are not an option.

Link exchanges produce a double bonus also. Not only will you get traffic from your link partners, the search engines will place you higher in their listings when they see lots of links pointing to your site.

The Internet was created to provide information, so if you want to succeed on the Internet and generate lots of free traffic, you are going to have to provide information on your website. Often times we do this by providing free information or articles on our website.

Offering free and useful information will keep your visitors coming back to your website, and the double bonus here is that the search engines love content. The more content your website has will produce better listings in the search engines.

Once you have perfected this process of building a website, getting listed in the search engines and have developed a huge traffic stream to your website, your going to be making sales. It will start out slow and as you build links and content, the traffic will grow and so will your sales.

Affiliate programs can be a great stepping stone to get your foot in the door towards cashing in on the riches that the Internet provides.

As time goes by you will find that you have learned so much and have evolved into an Internet Guru and now it’s time to take it one step farther, and start selling YOURSELF.

Getting Traffic or more precisely Targeted Traffic to your website is the most important strategy for the Survival and Success of your Internet Home Based Business. It is a well known fact that the vast majority of the new Home Business Entrepreneurs have only a small marketing budget. Not that they are all short of funds but it takes time for them to be convinced about spending money. It is their desire and determination to cash in on the vast potential the Internet offers that has thrust them into this field of activity.

Follow these free, reliable methods and get the Traffic you desperately need to get noticed in the Internet. Some methods are time consuming and laborious but when money is the critical factor, time and labor should not be of major concern.

    1. Reciprocal Linking.
Reciprocal linking is one of the most popular ways to get traffic to your Home Based Business site and also boost your rankings in the search engines. The strategy you should follow is: (a) Go to search engines such as Google, Yahoo or MSN and identify the websites that are similar or relevant to yours with high page ranks. (b)Eliminate those that are in direct competition to you. (c) Persuade and convince the webmasters to exchange links with you. (d) Identify quality websites i.e. websites with PR3 and over that have high traffic and exchange links with them.

    2. Writing Articles.
One of the best ways to get high targeted traffic and one way links to your Home Business is to write articles and submit them to (a) Article Directories, (b) Ezine Publishers, and (c) High traffic websites that accept article submissions. Quality articles are in great demand and if you can write quality, thought provoking and educative articles in your field of expertise, your articles will definitely be accepted for publication. You should ensure that (a) you have a Resource Box at the bottom of the article. (b) And have your URL in the Resource Box. If your article is impressive you can expect a massive influx of visitors to your website via the resource box.

    3. Submitting to Directories.
Once your website is ready with good content and quality links, you should start submitting your website to Search Engine Google and the Directories. Submitting to Directories is another way of getting additional targeted traffic to your website. This also increases your site’s overall importance to obtain a high page rank. If you want to be visible in the internet world, getting listed in Directories especially in Directories with high page rank and traffic is the fastest way to do it. Some charge a fee for listing while others are free. Among the free directories some insist on a link back from your site. Link back to them happily and get listed.

    4. Posting at Forums.
Another great way of getting free traffic is to post at discussion forums on a regular basis. If your contributions at these forums display good knowledge and authority, an immediate increase in your website traffic will be seen. To get the maximum benefit, (a) visit high traffic forums, (b) display your knowledge and (c) include your signature file and URL there. It is this URL that will siphon traffic to your site.

    5. Emails.
The emails that you send out, whether it is personal or business can be a source of traffic. You have to ensure that your advertisement or signature is there at the bottom of the page with your URL. Though it might not be much traffic, nevertheless it is free traffic. Make the best use of it.

    6 Tell a friend/Refer a friend.
Another source of traffic which is often overlooked is through your own website. Place a “Tell a Friend” or “Refer a Friend” image or script on your website. This can be obtained free from several sources, by searching in the search engines. Visitors, who sincerely appreciate your site and are grateful for the information and the resources provided, will pass on the good news to their friends.

    7. eBay Traffic.
Traffic from eBay is not the normal channel but it is working for many. Any traffic that is free is what you need most. So (a) register yourself with eBay, (b) go to the “about me” page and fill in useful information with a link to your website. If done correctly, you are certain to get a significant amount of traffic since millions visit eBay every month.

    8. Fresh Content.
It is surprising that many webmasters spend much time in finding various avenues to attract visitors to their sites but overlook the importance of adding fresh content to their sites. Content is King and Search Engines love fresh content. Your visitors love them too. It does not cost you anything so add fresh content regularly and they will keep on returning again and again.

Millions of websites are lost deep down in the Internet Wilderness unheard of and unsung. Certainly you don’t want to be one of those! Get started. Start making money from home by implementing your Internet Marketing program.

    10 Powerful Marketing Tips

    2008
    05.12

    1. Print your best small ad on a postcard and mail it to prospects in your targeted market. People read postcards when the message is brief. A small ad on a postcard can drive a high volume of traffic to your web site and generate a flood of sales leads for a very small cost.

    2. No single marketing effort works all the time for every business, so rotate several marketing tactics and vary your approach. Your customers tune out after awhile if you toot only one note. Not only that, YOU get bored. Marketing can be fun, so take advantage of the thousands of opportunities available for communicating your value to customers. But don’t be arbitrary about your selection of a variety of marketing ploys. Plan carefully. Get feedback from customers and adapt your efforts accordingly.

    3. Use buddy marketing to promote your business. For example, if you send out brochures, you could include a leaflet and/or business card of another business, which had agreed to do the same for you. This gives you the chance to reach a whole new pool of potential customers.

    4. Answer Your Phone Differently. Try announcing a special offer when you answer the phone. For example you could say, “Good morning, this is Ann Marie with Check It Out; ask me about my special marketing offer.” The caller is compelled to ask about the offer. Sure, many companies have recorded messages that play when you’re tied up in a queue, but who do you know that has a live message? I certainly haven’t heard of anyone. Make sure your offer is aggressive and increase your caller’s urgency by including a not-so-distant expiration date.

    5. Stick It! Use stickers, stamps and handwritten notes on all of your direct mail efforts and day-to-day business mail. Remember, when you put a sticker or handwritten message on the outside of an envelope, it has the impact of a miniature billboard. People read it first; however, the message should be short and concise so it can be read in less than 10 seconds.

    6. Send A Second Offer To Your Customers Immediately After They’ve Purchased Your customer just purchased a sweater from your clothing shop. Send a handwritten note to your customer thanking them for their business and informing them that upon their return with “this note” they may take advantage of a private offer, such as 20% off their next purchase. To create urgency, remember to include an expiration date.

    7. Newsletters. Did you know it costs six times more to make a sale to a new customer than to an existing one? You can use newsletters to focus your marketing on past customers. Keep costs down by sacrificing frequency and high production values. If printed newsletters are too expensive, consider an e-mail newsletter sent to people who subscribe at your Web site.

    8. Seminars/ open house. Hosting an event is a great way to gain face time with key customers and prospects as well as get your company name circulating. With the right programming, you’ll be rewarded with a nice turnout and media coverage. If it’s a seminar, limit the attendance and charge a fee. A fee gives the impression of value. Free often connotes, whether intended or not, that attendees will have to endure a sales pitch.

    9. Bartering. This is an excellent tool to promote your business and get others to use your product and services. You can trade your product for advertising space or for another company’s product or service. This is especially helpful when two companies on limited budgets can exchange their services.

    10. Mail Outs. Enclose your brochure, ad, flyer etc. in all your outgoing mail. It doesn’t cost any additional postage and you’ll be surprised at who could use what you’re offering.

Internet Marketing Solution – Content, Content, Content

    2008
    05.12

If you’re looking for the number one, hot Internet marketing solution that will propel your website to the number one spot on the most popular search engines you have a long search ahead of you. The truth is that there really isn’t one technique that will accomplish such a major feat for you. The most successful and popular websites employ a number of techniques to garner that longed for spot. That being said, however; you should know that not all techniques are equal. Some techniques will definitely get you more results than others and the granddaddy of them all is content.

You may have heard this term bandied about and wondered what exactly it is; especially if you’re new to the Internet marketing game. In short, content is the bulk of information that is placed on your site; it is the useful, informational and entertaining information that has one sole purpose. Content is the Internet marketing solution that will drive customers to your site in hordes, if done correctly.

So, you might be asking; how is content done correctly? Good content involves a number of articles that are fresh, unique and provide information that is of value to your targeted audience. It needs to be updated regularly and should be professionally written. That means no typos, no grammar and spelling mistakes. For this Internet marketing solution to be successful, your site’s content should also be easy to read and laid out in a way that allows important information to ‘leap’ off the page. Oh, and as if that’s not enough; you need to know which keywords to place in your content articles and where to place them. That all sounds easy enough, right?

There are a number of ways you can obtain content for your website. Some people try the good old cut and paste method of ‘borrowing’ information from other sites; however this can get you in trouble for a couple of reasons. First, that information is probably copyrighted and if you’re caught you’ll end up in major trouble. Second, one of the rules of good content is that should be original and unique. That means your target audience does not want to see the same information on your site that they just viewed on another site.

Free content is available through a number of means on the Internet, but again; you’re back to trying to get original content. If you jumped at the chance for free web content, how many other people do you think did as well? If you are personally able to write in a professional, coherent and interesting manner, then this may be a good Internet marketing solution. If not, however; your best bet is going to be either persuading a family member or friend who can do it for you or else hire a professional writer. Yes, it costs money to do that. Remember the old adage? It takes money to make money.

Making Affiliate Marketing Work up a Profit

    2008
    05.12

Affiliate marketing is the promotion of a product in which the affiliate is compensated for producing sales.

There are many ways to earn money with affiliate marketing. With all of the ebooks, courses and programs offered it is possible to become frustrated and to lose a considerable sum of money in the process.

This is usually the case with most people who attempt affiliate marketing. The conclusion that many come to is that only the pros are capable of earning a living online.

The truth is that affiliate marketing is simple. If you do the right thing and apply yourself, and repeat the process, you will be successful.

If you are focused and commit yourself, just as in any effort, there is no reason why you cannot become successful. On the other hand, jumping from one opportunity to the next means that you are doomed to failure.

As for now, consider some of the following guidelines. You can follow these guidelines to a winning affiliate promoting campaign. Once you have realized that it is so easy, and that it essentially works, you will have the assurance and confidence to obtain success on affiliate marketing.

Begin by educating yourself with the things not necessary to you in starting an affiliate marketing program:

? Website is not essential when starting. ? Pay-per-click campaign is not required ? You will not have to read long-pages of e-books. ? There is no software needed.

If not all of these are needed, then what is there for you to keep?

You will only have an affiliate program to market. Select the program that will present you with a great sales memo and an excellent product. You may also opt for a program that provides an outstanding income every month. An outstanding profit is produced via the programs that rate the client on a monthly payment bases. The affiliate is then compensated each month the client maintains its subscription.

Now, how will you market your affiliate program?

Making articles is an ideal way to do this. Write an article and let others read it, copy and dispense on their own websites. In this way, you are already given an advantage to promote your affiliate program and your writings as well.

Every article you create should have a resource box with your name on it of course and a few lines consisting of anything that you want to say. This is the area where you can endorse your affiliate program and also where you can put your affiliate link.

The resource box should indicate something that can stimulate your reader and click your affiliate link.

Think of this as merely an easy task. Because it really is easy! However, it still needs hard work and time. Also, admit this ? in order for you to earn some money you will have to accomplish even a bit.

If you think you cannot do all of these every month, then do not expect the taste of success.

This is just an easy plan though it is already proven effective. It will not cost any amount but your time to write articles and effort to distribute it.

Lastly, whatever it is that you want to do, maintain your center. Think that you can do it, because you really can!

Great Ways to Promote Your Business Using Internet Marketing

    2008
    05.12

In the online world, there are tons of different ways that you can go about promoting your own business. It’s very important that you understand Internet marketing, or your online business will never make it. That is because people have to know that you are selling something before they can buy from you. There are tons of different online stores out there that are more than likely selling the same thing that you are selling. So what is the one thing that is going to make them choose your store over a different store? That is how well you market your online business. You have to get the name of your business out there, and you have to get it out there as much as you can. The more you can do that, the better chance you have of running a successful business.

The first and best way to get your name out there is to get it notice by Search Engine sites like Yahoo! or Google. These are sites that even have programs where you can add your business to different websites that are related to your product. This is called Google AdWords. They will help you place online ads all over the Internet. This is a great way to start out when trying to get your business noticed. Although this is a great way to start out, it’s not going to be the only thing that you need to do. After you get your online business noticed, you need to find other ways to market it. One great way is to visit online forums and have your business name and link in your posts. This can be easy to do by attaching it to the bottom of every post. However, for this to work, whatever site you join has to be related to what you are selling.

The next thing you need to do is look around at a whole bunch of social marketing sites. These are some of the biggest sites on the Internet to date. Some of these sites include places like MySpace, Yuwie, and of course myLot. These are places where you are going to want to place ads if you can. Talk to these sites about how you would go about getting ads placed on their site. Millions of people use these sites every day, and because of that, they are the prime area to place an ad. You will notice that your site’s hit counter is going to go through the roof after placing ads at these places.

Last, but not least, you need to keep up with what the stats are doing on your webpage. Make sure that you are getting quality leads to your site. This can be done by checking around and getting stat counters for your webpage. When you are talking about stat counters, you are talking about more than just Hit counters. Those are helpful, but you are going to need counters that are going to see how many people are coming to your site, how long they are staying, if they are buying anything, and what links they are clicking on.

A few quick thoughts about why Blogging is important.

    2008
    05.12

To blog or not to blog, that is the question. Or is it? Many would say that having a blog for any sized business is the way to go, I would tend to agree, however, it needs to be done right. Here are a few reasons why starting a blog is a good idea and a few additional resources to help you get started.

First, decide who will write your blog. Great bloggers are social, extroverted and in general speak well. A blogger can be any age so do not discriminate, in fact, many top bloggers are over the age of 40. I would also recommend asking the CEO or President of your company to write the blog. Having a name or presence can help the Blog gain momentum right awat because people will be curious to hear this persons voice. Read more about CEO bloggers here: http://www.ceoblogwatch.com/

Second, decide on a blogging platform. YourEdgeOnline.com offers a free Blogcast with every domain name purchase, this might be the easiest way to launch a blog. You might also want to check out WordPress or Blogger for more help.

Third, post regularly to keep the content fresh. Nothing is worse than a dead blog.

Finally, burn the feed to a syndication service like Feedburner.com to secure additional back links to your blog. This also allows visitors to read your blog in an RSS reader.

There are many more ways to create a healthy blog. We will post regular articles to help you get the most out of this powerful marketing tool.

Google is launching a new Social networking service called Google Friend Connect

    2008
    05.12

This is pretty whizzbang as far as Internet technology is concerned. Google announced today that it has released it’s new social networking technology Google Friend Connect. The service looks pretty cool as it let’s you connect friends to websites you visit and are advocating for. The referred can then join the sites network and receive updates when new members, events, information have been posted.

“With Friend Connect, the owner of a Web site would add a snippet of code to its page. Google’s servers would handle the rest.

For example, one of the first Friend Connect customers will be independent musician Ingrid Michaelson, who like most entertainers has an official Web site ( http://www.ingridmichaelson.com). Now her fans can befriend one another if they visit her MySpace page.”

The New Internet Marketing Trend – Streaming Web Audio

    2008
    05.09

    Article presented by Jason Murphy

Jason can be reached via email: jmurphy@youredgeonline.com

Putting MP3 audio files on the Internet is not something new or recently invented technology, it has been making noise online for quite a number of years, but has never had been quite so popular and talked about as it is in today’s Internet market. There is definitely a buzz around it today.

When I first started multimedia design seven years ago, MP3 audio files were already spread around the Internet. MP3′s popularity rose rapidly after Napster released their P2P file sharing network program in 1999.

Because the MP3 file size is much smaller then MOV, WAV audio format, and has better sound quality, it did not take too long for MP3 to become a major digital audio format of Internet.

Today, it continues to dominate the Internet?s audio market, and has remained unchanged as the best choice among digital audio music formats.

Historically, there was a lack of Internet speed and the size of computer hard disks and ROM’s were relatively small and expensive. Especially MP3 files had to be converted from MOV or WAV file formats and the audio recording, editing hardware and software was very complicated to use, as well as very expensive and only professional studios had deep enough pockets to purchase.

Therefore, it had never been an easy tool for Internet marketers and web developers to use to their advantage. I can still remember the struggles to compress the audio files, and balancing the quality of the sound, to make it 28.8kbps modem compatible.

Very few business websites had web audio in their website, and the ones who did were only there as background music. There was not any marketing purpose or strategy behind it. It was largely designers showing off their advanced tricks, trying to impress their employers, essentially an e-toy for website designers.

Today, the Internet bandwidth is no longer a major impediment to Internet multimedia data transferring. Technology continues to evolve at lightning speed, computers now have massive capacities and the price of hardware has dramatically dropped, making it possible for web hosting company to provide a large amount of server space for website owners to store and transfer audio and video content, at an enormously low cost.

But the price of audio editing software remained relatively high, with more advanced features, but still posed a barrier to Internet marketers who intended to make audio a part of their Internet marketing.

This presented an opportunity for Internet Marketers and software developers. Together, they have worked out these issues, limiting seldom used advanced features, keeping only the most utilized, and developed a much more simple software for web audio recording.

This new web audio software and related services has been sold and used by Internet marketers and online business owners throughout the past few years and the results are quite convincing.

Some have claimed their sales conversion rate to have increased by 40) just by adding the audio sales litter on their web page. Can this be true? I will discuss this in more depth in another issue, but absolutely, web audio and video added a new depth, a new dimension to Internet marketing. It is mainly used for audio newsletters, web audio sales letters, audio testimonials, recorded tele-seminars, raining materials and more.

It is a very simple piece of software. If you know how to talk, and how to click, you can record your message and put it online. No experiences or technical know-how necessary, no special equipment needed, except a microphone connected to your computer.

I still use the advanced Pro version audio/video production software for my complicated projects, but I like to use this small, and feature-focused software for the smaller single task projects, because of the simplicity and the time saving. And the price of the software is so cheep!

For those who don’t have a computer, can’t figure out how to plug in the microphone into their computer, or are too lazy to do so, some marketers have even designed a telephone system for recording audio files for them. You simply pick up phone, dial their number, record your message on their system, and they will deliver your audio file to your website. But you have to pay a monthly fee for your laziness, and you still have to pick up your phone and dial the number.

Some dedicated web hosting companies, such as the one I use, ThirdSphere, also jumped onto this new trend, including related features in their service package to gain sales. It provides Flash Audio Generator, Flash Video Generator software, and helps web designers to convert their pre-recorded audio and video file to a lightweight FLV file to be put online.

As a new highly effective Internet marketing method, streaming web audio and video will continue to grow in the Internet marketing realm and continue to grasp at Internet marketers and visitors? attention for a number of yeas, until the day when all sites on Internet have a voice and talk to us.

For more information about how to use streaming web audio as am effective Internet marketing method, and how to recording a mp3 audio for website use, try taking a look at:

    Internet Marketing And Free Advertising

    2008
    05.08

    Article submitted by Jason Murphy

One of the more potent forms of Internet marketing is through the use of a press release. In many cases this is referred to as free advertising.

The reason it is thought of in that way is because when the press release is distributed it is generally picked up by online and print magazines and published at no charge as a news item.

If you have studied aspects of online marketing you already know that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a free method of getting search engines to rank your site higher.

For business owners on a budget the use of SEO and the press release are two proven methods to maximize your site exposure with limited costs.

What a minute! I can hear you think, “If it’s free how can there be a cost involved?”

Good question. You see, unless you are especially gifted in writing press releases you will need to hire a writer to craft a release that highlights the best information, gathers appropriate quotes and statistics and writes the release in a way that encourages publications to print it. Secondarily unless you have significant personal contacts you may need to higher an online press release distribution service to make your release widely available.

As you can see there will be cost involved for your free advertising in the form of a press release. On the flip side of that coin you will find that if you had to pay for all of the locations the release may ultimately be found it would cost much more.

If you are going to attempt to write a press release on your own you need to know that the first paragraph is designed to provide the most basic information and everything else written should compliment that original statement.

For instance if you are developing a new website that is designed to sell cowbells the following might be a way to start the release (I chose the name, because as of this writing it was not in use).

The launch of MyCowBells.com has its web design owner, Scooter James saying, “The initial results of our site prove that the world has been waiting for a one-stop shop for their bovine bells” The site is crafted to appeal to site visitors needing cowbells for farm use or for home d?cor. The Wranglin‘ Room provides farm based stories sent in by site visitors.

If a news organization were to read the first paragraph they would have an understanding of what the press release was about.

There are those who suggest you need to release information a little bit at a time over the course of several paragraphs, but most news media professionals do not have time to review every press release that comes across their desk. By using the first paragraph as a synopsis for the release it makes the chances of publishing better for you in the long run because the reader doesn’t have to second-guess what it’s all about.

There is incredible promotional value in utilizing the free aspect of press releases. However, you should never be afraid to call on someone to help you make your release shine. In most cases it can pay huge dividends as more and more news outlets print your release.

“Ohio is home to a vibrant online marketing community,” said Bill Balderaz of Webbed Marketing, a Columbus-based Internet marketing agency (http://www.webbedmarketing.com/columbusohioseo.html) one of the charter members of OWL. “Online marketing agencies, technology firms, software solution providers, web design firms, and other Internet marketing experts all call Ohio home,” he added. “This event is about bringing the online marketing community together to share knowledge with the larger marketing community.”

The one day session (http://www.ohiowebleaders.com/events/index.html) will feature six sessions covering a wide range of topics including web design, search engine marketing, blogging for businesses, viral marketing and search engine marketing.

“Our goal is to have marketing managers from around Ohio attend this event and leave with a solid roadmap to help them drive more business with their web sites,” said Tom Augustine, President of MindsOn Marketing, a marketing communications and web development agency (http://www.mindson.com). Augustine will be leading the web design session at the event.

“In one day, attendees will learn the basics for creating a solid integrated marketing campaign that uses both online and traditional tactics to drive visitors to their websites–and turn those visitors into sales and leads,” Augustine said.

The conference will also feature Columbus-based ClearSaleing, ClearSaleing helps Internet retailers and direct marketers improve the performance of their search engine marketing (http://www.clearsaleing.com) and any other form of online advertising and prove their results through a technology that measures and optimizes online advertising. The company was founded by Ohio entrepreneurs Mike Lanese and Randy Smith and former Google executive Adam Goldberg.

“ClearSaleing has great clients and partners here in Ohio,” Goldberg, who will be speaking at the event, said. “We’re excited to take part in this event. This event is brining some of the most innovative online marketing minds in Ohio together. I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

The conference will feature a session on blogging for business by Jennifer Laycock, Editor of Search Engine Guide. Laycock, an internationally known speaker and blogger, specializes in common sense search engine marketing, viral marketing and customer outreach via social media and blogs. A former search marketing consultant and in-house trainer, Jennifer’s clients have included companies like Verizon, American Greetings and Highlights for Children. She has been the featured speaker at dozens of online marketing events around the world.

“We’re thrilled to have Jennifer Laycock featured at this event,” Balderaz said. “Her support is key in building a strong online marketing community in Ohio.”

“Blogging is one of those things that tends to get misunderstood in the marketing realm. Companies either push too hard, or don’t push hard enough,” Laycock explained. “Learning how to leverage blogs for conversation with customers and seeing the amazing results that can come with reaching out to your community online can go a long way toward helping a company improve their business prospects on the web.”

Nihar Bihani, an organic search engine expert formerly with Columbus-based ECNext, will lead the day’s session on organic search engine optimization. Bihani has managed organic search engine optimization programs for some of the largest and most visited business web sites on the Internet.

The conference will also feature a panel discussion with Ohio marketing managers who have successfully integrating online and traditional marketing to drive more business via the web.

“Integration is key,” said Amy Marshall of Webbed Marketing, who will be leading the panel with Randy James from MindsOn Marketing. “The most successful web sites attract visitors from multiple channels, including both traditional and online campaigns.”

“We’re excited to have attracted such an all-star line up to our first event in Ohio. We know that attendees will learn a lot from the experts who are in this world every day. At the end of the day, we want marketing executives to leave knowing they have a plan to drive more business from their websites,” Augustine said.

Stop wasting money on paid inclusions to search engines: tips and tricks to get indexed fast and with less work.

    Article submitted by Lyndsey Murphy

As a matter of fact, I recommend NOT wasting money on pay inclusion in most cases because it doesn’t offer enough of an advantage (and many times the fees give you absolutely no advantage – the only exception are the few sites that guarantee placement within a specific timeline). Focus your online marketing and gain positive and targeted traffic without paying out for “expedited listings” or “submission software.”

Submission software can appear to save time and effort, but in all reality, it doesn’t…

I suggest to clients that they don’t waste their time with submission software. No matter how good it sounds, honestly, the best way to attain and maintain strong search engine rankings is with a solid plan, time, diligence and staying active online. Search engine submission and optimization is a marketing strategy, and as such is not a one-shot process.

    A plan that works…

The important thing is to use a good, strong and simple approach that really works and endures through the ever-changing standards in the search industry. There are some helpful free search engine submission tools, but the downside is, you get involved in several and you can duplicate efforts, which not only wastes time, but some engines and directories could mistake it for spam (I’ve seen this happen!).

My experience and best advice is, find one helpful free submission tool site (my personal favorite is SelfPromotion.com (http:// selfpromotion.com/) and use it as a base. Keep a spreadsheet or submission log, and keep track of when you submit, what your Meta data/tags say (especially your ranking and core keywords), and note your rankings. This may sound like work, but really, once you set it up you will find it is the easiest way to keep from wasting time and it will help you track when your listings need some attention.

Basics that I recommend to reach a good rank and maintain it:

    * Research keywords for your site. Take some time, check out competitor’s sites, keyword lists, etc.

    * Write GOOD title and description META tags for every page on your site. You really need custom META tag info for every page. There are many sites that will give you good advice on how to write great tag content. If you use a good submission site, you will find help there.

    * Construct a good keyword tag specific to every page.

    * Submit your site to every free search engine and directory you can find that is appropriate for your site…always use the free links because the paid ones won’t give you any advantages (with very few exceptions).

    * Be patient…it can take three months or more to become listed by the “big guys” when you use indexing only.

    * Get a jump on the waiting time and use search engine optimization techniques for your site content, online marketing such as press releases and circulating free articles, place your site on industry directories and local business directories online.

    * Put your site address (URL) on EVERYTHING. (Well, everything reasonable and legal)

By using this brief lesson on marketing your site, you can build a strong marketing base with absolutely no cost whatsoever. And in doing so, you are gaining in-depth knowledge of your site’s target audience, and it can only help with future marketing. Good luck!

    The Future of Mobile Commerce

    Article submitted by Jason Murphy

Some e-retailers big and small have it—Amazon.com,Overstock.com, Netflix, AmericanGreetings.com, Buy.com, Godiva Chocolatier, GameStop, Moosejaw Mountaineering, Golfio and Capalbo’s Gift Baskets, to name a few. But the overwhelming majority of merchants do not. And that is a presence in m-commerce.

8% of the top 1,000 U.S. brands operate mobile web sites, a new study shows. However, only 2% of brands in the retail sector operate mobile sites, according to the “Top 1,000 U.S. Brands Mobile Web Presence Survey” from multimedia technology and research firm RarePlay.com.

Of the 10 retail categories broken out from 35 brand categories in the study, the standout is electronics: 19% of electronics brands have built and maintain mobile web sites. Other early adopters include home appliances (9%) and apparel (7%). The survey does not break down the percent of mobile sites that offer the ability to purchase products vs. those that are pure marketing vehicles.

Tiny but growingThe presence of e-retailers with mobile sites is growing; but just like Internet adoption in the mid-’90s, e-retailers today are taking baby steps toward initiating a mobile presence, says Ron Knowlton, RarePlay founder and chief technology officer.

“At the moment the majority of m-commerce transactions are limited to mobile device add-ons like ringtones, games, wallpapers and screensavers. Although small, these minor transactions are working to instill confidence in the public’s perception of m-commerce,” Knowlton says. “People now are beginning to feel like m-commerce transactions are secure, and, as a result, we are seeing an increasing number of businesses supporting m-commerce.”

More than three-quarters of the 105 million U.S. households own at least one mobile phone, and, on average, two; household penetration will exceed 85% by 2009, according to Forrester Research Inc., which specializes in technology’s impact on business and consumers. Consumers, especially young ones, are relying more on their mobile phones for voice and text communication, making the time right for e-retailers to begin experimenting with m-commerce, the study suggests.

Mobile commerce is the transaction on mobile phones and PDAs of retail business through pared-down versions of e-commerce sites via wireless Internet access or on shopping portals (also known as decks) on proprietary wireless telecommunications networks. Internet-based mobile sites can be freestanding destinations using one of nine common mobile domain formats—including URLs that incorporate “m” or “wap” or “mobi”—or sites with the same URL as their e-commerce counterparts that manifest as a mobile version via technology that automatically detects if a shopper is coming to the site via mobile device.

How to M-commerce sites can reside on a retailer’s e-commerce platform or be hosted by an e-commerce or m-commerce technology vendor. The small sites can be created in house or outsourced. They are hard coded in house or out, or built by retailer or vendor staff using template applications.

Retailers decide what products to make available and display on their m-commerce sites and how consumers can access them, often via home page site search boxes. Retailer staff can use the same product descriptions and images, shrinking them to better fit mobile screens, or whittle and downsize to offer a different presentation. Many m-commerce sites also include product reviews and other features.

Many e-retailers and consumer brand manufacturers with mobile sites use them purely as a marketing and branding vehicle—an adjunct to e-commerce operations.
Some, though, have mobile sites that sell or auction products. There are three kinds of m-commerce transactions. First is the purchase of digital content, such as downloading a ringtone directly to a phone. Second is the use of Internet services requiring paid subscriptions, such as searching for titles and placing them in a Netflix queue. And third is the purchase of merchandise—traditional e-commerce but via mobile device.

While buying digital content via telecommunications carriers’ shopping decks is quickly becoming common, the first merchandise e-retailers to have major success in m-commerce will be sellers of gifts and related items, predicts Tamara Mendelsohn, consumer markets analyst who specializes in m-commerce at Forrester Research. “What causes a consumer to make a purchase over their phone when the interface is a little more difficult to use? Time and urgency,” she states. “There are cases where consumers need to purchase something right away, regardless of where they are.”

However, whether or not a purchase takes place, the mobile platform will have a profound impact on e-commerce, Mendelsohn predicts. “The mobile phone will have a huge role in retail simply by providing access to consumer information wherever a shopper may be, such as standing in a store in front of a row of plasma TVs or on their way to the store to buy one.”

The big impact still is a ways off, though, experts say. “There will not be big growth in m-commerce during the next 18 months, it’s safe to say,” says Josh Crandall, managing director of Media-Screen Consulting, a digital media research and consulting firm.

Another mobile expert predicts the same timeframe, adding when m-commerce takes off the growth will be impressive. “Once users are convinced of security and convenience,” says Vikrant Gandhi, strategic industry analyst for mobile communications at research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, “and e-retailers install the necessary infrastructure, it will fly.”
As U.S. consumers grow increasingly comfortable with mobile devices, using them for activities beyond voice, the mobile channel stands to exert a greater impact on their shopping habits, according to “U.S. Mobile Commerce 2007: Low Reception,” written by Forrester Research’s Mendelsohn with four colleagues. However, only 12% of U.S. households with mobile phones use their carriers’ data services, which enable most m-commerce activities.

Simple to useThe biggest challenges m-commerce faces are improving the mobile web site user experience and, as with e-commerce, overcoming negative perceptions about information security, says Chetan Sharma, president of Chetan Sharma Consulting, which specializes in mobile technology. And even then, it comes down to the interface more than anything else, Mendelsohn adds.

Gandhi suggests e-retailers begin looking into what m-commerce is and the value it might bring to their businesses. “E-retailers can start by creating a mobile presence,” he says, “whether it is a site that enables transactions or only marketing and branding efforts.”
It’s important for e-retailers to understand the value of having a mobile web presence, RarePlay’s Knowlton chimes in. “Shoppers are using them to identify and locate areas and products of interest,” he says.

Generally, e-retailers should take a cautious, risk-averse approach to m-commerce, but they should be experimenting, Mendelsohn says. “Web-only retailers can look to partner with companies like Digby—a mobile shopping mall that already has made the investment in the interface—that can easily and quickly give them access to the mobile channe
    l,” she says.
Adds consultant Sharma: “It is inevitable that mobile devices will become an accepted way to conduct transactions.”

E-retailers that choose to be m-commerce pioneers should bear in mind a few fundamentals before making the leap. “U.S. Mobile Commerce 2007: Low Reception” cites the following:
Age plays a large role in adoption: Generation Y’ers are the most likely of any generation to own a mobile phone or smartphone, use their phones to send and receive text messages, buy or download content, and use the mobile Internet.Consumers require a strong m-commerce value proposition: They say time savings is key.Security and privacy remain big concerns: As with the Internet, m-commerce adoption is struggling because of security and privacy fears. 57% of mobile device owners worry about data security; only 20% have no security concerns.

    The History of Mobile Commerce

    2008
    05.07

    History
Mobile commerce was coined in the late 1990s during the dot-com boom. The idea that highly profitable mobile commerce applications would be possible through the broadband mobile telephony provided by 2.5G and 3G cellphone services was one of the main reasons for hundreds of billions of dollars in licensing fees paid by European telecommunications companies for UMTS and other 3G licenses in 2000 and 2001.
PDAs and cellular phones have become so popular that many businesses are beginning to use m-commerce as a more efficient method of reaching the demands of their customers. Although technological trends and advances are concentrated in Asia and in Europe, North America (Canada and the United States) is also beginning to experiment with early-stage m-commerce.
The recent alliance between Sprint Nextel and Clearwire for WiMAX networks being built for completion by 2008 will acclerate the more data-intensive 4G networks that will provide a turning point in m-commerce in North America. The forthcoming spectrum auction by FCC, scheduled for early 2008, portends major auction rule changes that are geared for more consumer options and less control by telecom operators as “network gatekeepers”. The auction rule changes are being pushed by Google, irking Verizon Wireless and AT&T and signifying a big change coming to m-commerce
