Twitter as a Learning Tool for College Students

Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas, wanted to know how to reach more students and involve more people in class discussions both in and out of the classroom. She had heard of Twitter and decided to try to leverage it to spur on more collaboration with her students.

Students seem to really respond and engage her content more thoroughly. One student even said:

In a class of 90 plus trying to pipe up and get your opinion heard is a little intimidating. However with this we can post something from our phone and get heard.”

Before I wrote this post I spoke to some of my friends about this and we all agreed that this would have helped us engage with our classroom content more easily. Furthermore we all felt it would improve collaboration with students. Classrooms can create Twitter lists that students can follow for notes, group projects or follow-up discussions.

Finally, this approach allows a professor to travel and to still maintain a relationship with his/her students by simply logging in.

The professor in this video was at a teaching conference in Santa Fe but still managed to answer questions on that day’s lecture via Twitter.
