I read this article today and it really inspired me and made me believe that my generation will not become the Sheep that so many other generations have turned into. Flailing away in Corporate America with dead-end jobs and minimal-pay.
Now I work in Corporate America too but I have a great job in an exciting Emerging Market and run a small business on the side. So for me this post is more about inspiring others to follow their passion and dreams.
A career is more than a paycheck it is a means to finding yourself. Through discovery and trouble shooting at work we often form an identity that helps shape who we are and who we will become.
So, if you are in a cube somewhere right now, reading this, ask yourself if you are truly happy.
And if you answer NO – quit your job immediately and go home. You probably are not adding much value to your company and therefore not really adding much value to your life either.
I have had 26 jobs in my life.
Some would call me a “drifter” or “job-hopper”. I retort with “I am connected to my soul” and know when and how to make myself happy and get the most out of my skill set. When I find myself getting bored – I stop. Boredom blows and leads to complacency – the same kind of complacency that will either get you fired or ensure your middle-class status for life.
Don’t be a Sheep.
Each time I’ve resigned a position I felt scared at first and then empowered, excited and renewed. And every single time I found a better position, with more responsibility, better pay and more satisfaction.
This kind of mindset turns into an energy and people can smell it. It’s kind of like when you can smell success on some one. People can tell you are different and not-owned by anybody. The really good jobs out there seek people with that kind of energy.
