What do I post to Twitter?

One question I get asked a lot is “What do I post to Twitter”? This is common because even though everyone keeps talking about how valuable social media platforms like Twitter are for marketing, monitoring and servicing your audience; there really has never been a definitive guide in terms of what content we should publish. I mean obviously the content you post should be relevant to your audience, so that is always a good starting point.

However, I’ve noticed that social media audiences tend to like fun content just as much as relevant. Stuff that might not be related to your industry, yet still somehow manages to communicate your personality. For example, I am a do-it-yourself kind of guy. So, I like to post articles and links to websites and articles that teach people how to do things. Whether it is building a shelf or creating a website, my audience tends to enjoy this content.

Pictures and videos are another good way to post interesting content to Twitter. If you can find pictures of “the top ten most amazing thunderstorms” or something similar people tend to get curious and click on them when posted. Some of this stuff will get retweeted too, simply because it is audience agnostic and almost anyone would be intrigued by seeing this kind of stuff.

I also like to post links to websites that I am trying to “get-in” with. For example, I tweet out posts from Mashable and Search Engine Land quite often; mostly because someday I may approach them for a guest posting/editorial role with their respected blogs. So by driving traffic to their website via my Twitter profile, they may just notice me when they review their website analytics and see that I was responsible for creating thousands of new visitors.

These are just a few ideas of what to post to Twitter. Feel free to share some of your own ideas as well.
